Journey to Flores Island

Beyond Bali
Flores

This three-day journey is designed for travelers who want to discover a very different side of Indonesia, far beyond Bali’s classic tourist routes. It is an opportunity to experience the traditional culture of Flores, visit remote mountain villages, and explore some of the island’s most unique natural and historical locations. The adventure begins with a scenic journey through the jungles of Flores, followed by a motorbike transfer to the starting point of the trek leading to the famous village of Waerebo. Hidden high in the mountains, this isolated settlement is known for its traditional cone-shaped Mbaru Niang houses and a way of life that has remained unchanged for generations. Spending the night here offers a rare chance to experience one of Indonesia’s most authentic local communities.

After returning from the mountains, the journey continues toward several remarkable places that reveal the unique character of Flores. You will visit Liang Bua Cave, one of Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites, where scientists discovered the remains of Homo floresiensis, often referred to as the famous Flores hobbit. After an overnight stay in Ruteng, the following day brings another iconic landscape of the island — the unusual Lingko rice fields, designed in the shape of a giant spider web according to ancient local traditions.

On the way back to Labuan Bajo, the route includes a stop at Cunca Plias Waterfall, where you can swim and relax surrounded by tropical nature. The final stop of the journey is Sylvia Hill, one of the best viewpoints near Labuan Bajo, where the day ends with panoramic views over the coastline and surrounding islands.

3 Days / 2 Nights — Labuan Bajo – Waerebo – Ruteng Per car (Avanza)

I went on this Flores trip with my son because I wanted to show him something different from the usual beach holidays. Overall, we both really enjoyed it. The highlight for us was definitely Waerebo village — it was pretty fascinating to see how people actually live in a place like that, so far from everything and in such a different way from what we’re used to. The trek wasn’t the easiest, but totally manageable. We also stopped at a waterfall. To be honest, I expected it to be a bit bigger, but after the hike it still felt great to jump in and cool off. Overall, a really solid trip if you want to experience a completely different side of Indonesia.

3 Days / 2 Nights — Labuan Bajo – Waerebo – Ruteng Per car (Innova)

My husband and I did this trip together and honestly it turned out to be one of the most unusual experiences we’ve had in Indonesia. What stayed with me the most was spending the night in Waerebo village. I still can’t quite process the fact that people genuinely live like this, high up in the mountains, without all the things we normally consider basic comforts, and for them it’s just everyday life. It was so interesting just watching their daily routines, seeing the houses, talking to local people and understanding how different life can look in another part of the world. Trips like this really put things into perspective. We’re very happy we decided to go.
